Who are Cabo
Pulmo Divers?
Cabo Pulmo Divers
are a recreational diving and sport fishing operation, is owned and
run by the historic Castro family who first came to Cabo Pulmo in 1900,
settled and raised their families. More than fifty Castros of the same
family still live and work in Cabo Pulmo today, contributing daily to
the growth of services to the American tourist population that come
here.
Jesus Castro Fiol,
'the grandfather', was the original Castro to live in Cabo Pulmo and
is the patriarch of the large clan here today. They say he's in his
late 90's. He came to Cabo Pulmo as the adopted child of a Mexican woman
who remained single all her life. The local 'Patrona', she possessed
almost 2,000 acres of land in Cabo Pulmo that she had acquired from
the government. Cattle and pearls were the dominant economic activities
of her hacienda. As a contributing member of the household, Jesus soon
had the reputation as being the best of the local pearl divers, free
diving without benefit of fins or mask for the riches in the Cabo Pulmo
Bay.
When his adopted
mother, the Patrona, died, Jesus was the sole inheritor of her land
holdings and businesses. As the pearl industry faded following an infestation,
the economic emphasis shifted to commercial fishing. However, Jesus
still passed his love and skill in the water on to his sons, especially
Enrique, Juan, and Ricardo. These men, in turn, raised their sons on
the beach, in the boats and in the water.
Today Cabo Pulmo
Divers is the beloved business of Mario and Paco Castro, the eldest
sons of Enrique. From the first, Mario showed a natural affinity for
swimming and diving and a corresponding disinterest in all other things.
As he grew his passion for the water beckoned him beyond the limits
of free diving and in 1990 he received his Open Water Certification,
the first in his family to have earned the coveted 'card'. To gain experience
he worked for a Cabo San Lucas dive shop and while there acquired his
Dive Master Certification so that he could realize his dream of having
a professional dive shop in Cabo Pulmo.
Mario opened his
business with his brother Paco, who had already developed an extraordinary
reputation as a fishing guide, breaking new ground for the family in
a transition from commercial fishing to sport fishing services for tourists.
They worked hard to realize their dream. In the beginning tanks had
to be driven all the way to Cabo San Lucas to refill them until local
American friends helped them acquire their first compressor. Later other
Americans helped him to acquire a second compressor as a back up to
the first. Mario says, "with a little money and a lot of friends"
they were able to build their business "poco a poco".
When the National
Marine Park opened in June 1995, Cabo Pulmo Divers embraced this attempt
to secure the health of the reef and it's extraordinary inhabitants
for generations to come. Both Mario and Paco, in their respective diving
and fishing activities, comply fully with any new regulations and are
committed to all informed efforts to preserve their underwater environment.
Today Cabo Pulmo
Divers has six panga-style launches ranging from 22' to 25', 75 HP motors
and a full array of rental equipment, mask, snorkels, fins, BCs, suits
and regulators. They are the exclusive dive service providers for all
the dive shops from Cabo San Lucas who offer day trips to divers wanting
to experience the geographically unique reef system in Cabo Pulmo. There
is a very close knit and co-operative dive community in Southern Baja.
The Castros enjoy the respect, affection and support of this 'family'
of underwater professionals for their role as pioneers, struggling to
'grow' this sport in Baja . . . and as the men who are now raising the
fourth generation of divers in Baja's most precious dive location.
We offer reservations online for
SCUBA trips, sport fishing and snorkelling tours.
